How FTS Can Make You Part of an Industry Undergoing Technological Evolution

The digital revolution permanently altered human behaviour, transforming the way we communicate, educate and even shop. With everything at the touch of a button, our expectations have advanced beyond what would’ve been unimaginable to us 15 years ago, let alone prior to that. For most of us, we long for a career to match our new-found expectations, a career within a stimulating, inventive and ground-breaking industry which many don’t consider the logistics industry to be. Therefore, this article considers the major reasons as to why we should re-examine any predisposed beliefs regarding the logistics industry and instead view it as the exciting, modern, and innovative industry it truly is, given its technological evolution.

  1. INVESTEMENT RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

The logistic industry is accountable for contributing around 14% of GDP of Europe, therefore it is no surprise that researchers and entrepreneurs are striving to be at the forefront of development with regards to logistics. The EU recognised the significance of the industry and in 2013 set up the platform ALICE. ALICE is based on the acknowledgement and requirement for efficient logistics and supply chain operations as part of the Horizon 2020 programme. The aim of the platform is to simultaneously synergise the needs of the planet, people and profit whist creating competitive advantage and industrial growth. Although Britain, following Brexit, will not be part of the EU, the research, innovation and technological development springing from the programme will no doubt benefit the Uk, once trade agreements have been finalised.  This means there will be potentially more job opportunities within the industry both within the UK and across Europe.

  1. NAVAGATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, TRACKING DEVICES AND INTEGRATABLE DATA

Navigational technology now enables route planning, meaning that routes no longer have to be planned a long in advance. With optimized routes, journeys are safer and more efficient. Some vehicles even utilize tracking devices which means that any issues can be identified quickly and real-time information can be gathered. Technology such as this, benefits businesses, as data gathered allows for the optimization of time between companies, especially with regards to international trade, effectively improving the accuracy and efficiency of distribution. Furthermore, data is now integratable across the supply chain, so information required really is only a click away. With regards to drivers themselves, such technology means that stress levels have decreased, allowing them to enjoy their job with higher levels of independence and tranquility, now doesn’t that sound appealing?

  1. VEHICLE VARIATION AND EFFICENCY

To meet the mounting demands on distribution with regards to frequency of deliveries, location of deliveries and the ever increasingly popular same day delivery options, vehicle designers and manufacturers have re-examined how to make vehicles more efficient, engineering various vehicles for different types of delivers as well as formulating solutions to lower their impact on the environment by restricting emissions.  Given that the planet is our home, I think we can all agree that using technology to improve the environment is beneficial to us all!
